Indian Pineapple Curry Recipe | Pineapple Gojju Recipe | Ananas Menaskai Recipe
I first tried this Pineapple Gojju at my friend Rajshri’s place. I was hesitant at first, but her insistence convinced me to give it a shot, and I was delighted by the explosion of flavors in my mouth. The sweet, tangy, and spicy notes blended so well that I couldn’t help but return for more!
Traditionally served as part of a South Indian meal, it pairs perfectly with steamed rice, balancing the dish with its vibrant flavors. It also complements breakfast staples like dosa, its chutney-like consistency adds a flavorful burst to these soft, savory foods.

Beyond its traditional uses, I’ve found that this Pineapple Curry makes a fantastic spread for sandwiches or wraps. I love how it tastes with roasted vegetables and tofu—it’s such a nice twist! I often use it as a dip for flatbreads or crackers, and it’s a fun alternative to usual spreads like hummus or salsa.
One of my favorite ways to enjoy this curry is in grain bowls. I like to mix it with quinoa, couscous, or brown rice, adding in some roasted veggies and proteins for a wholesome and tasty meal. Its thick and colorful texture makes it super easy to use in many different types of dishes, which is great because it works well in both traditional and modern meals. It’s like having a little burst of flavor that fits perfectly no matter how I’m serving it!
What is Pineapple Gojju?
Pineapple Curry, or Ananas Menaskai, is a classic Karnataka dish prepared using ripe pineapples, which lend their sweetness and tanginess to the dish. It’s enriched with a ground masala paste made from coconut, sesame seeds, and spices like urad dal, fenugreek seeds, and Kashmiri red chilies. The curry is then finished with a traditional tempering of mustard seeds and curry leaves, giving it a signature South Indian touch. This curry is versatile and can be served as a side dish with rice, or even with breakfast items like dosa or idli.
Why I Love Making Pineapple Gojju
I love making this Pineapple Curry because it brings together contrasting flavors in such a delightful way. The sweetness of the pineapple pairs so well with the tang of tamarind and the hint of spice from the chilies, creating a dish that’s vibrant and flavorful. It’s also incredibly versatile — whether you’re serving it with rice, idlis, or even grilled vegetables, it adds something special to every meal. Another reason I enjoy making this curry is that it can be adapted for different tastes, and its rich coconut masala paste makes it truly comforting.

How I Cook My Pineapple Gojju
I start by boiling the chopped pineapple in water for about 10 minutes until it softens. While the pineapple is cooking, I prepare the masala paste by dry roasting sesame seeds and then roasting urad dal, methi, dried red chilies, and curry leaves in oil. Once roasted, I transfer the spices to a blender, add fresh coconut and water, and blend everything into a smooth paste.
After the pineapple is cooked, I add tamarind juice, jaggery, turmeric, and salt to the pot and let it simmer for about 15 minutes. Then, I add the masala paste to the curry, adjust the consistency with more water if needed, and let it cook for another 10 minutes until it thickens and turns a rich, dark color. Finally, I temper mustard seeds, curry leaves, and dried chilies in coconut oil and pour this over the curry before serving it with hot steamed rice.

Important things to remember before you make this curry
- Select ripe pineapple: Ensure you pick a ripe, juicy pineapple for the best balance of sweet and sour flavors. The taste of the curry largely depends on the quality of the fruit.
- Adjust the jaggery and tamarind: If the pineapple is more sour, increase the quantity of jaggery and reduce the tamarind to maintain the perfect flavor balance.
- Variations: The same recipe can be adapted using sweet or raw mangoes, and even bitter gourd for a different twist on the traditional dish.
- Adjust Jaggery: If the pineapple is more sour, increase the amount of jaggery to balance the flavors and add sweetness.
- Adjust Tamarind: If the pineapple is naturally sweet, reduce the quantity of tamarind to avoid overpowering the dish with too much tanginess.
