Vegan Paneer Bhapa ( Steamed Tofu in Mustard Sauce)

Introduction

This  Steamed Tofu is a delightful twist on a classic Bengali Paneer Bhapa, recipe. Traditionally, this dish features paneer marinated in a rich paste of poppy seeds and mustard, combined with aromatic spices, and then steamed to perfection.

My version is special because it substitutes tofu for paneer, making it entirely vegan without compromising on taste. The vibrant flavors of the mustard and poppy seed blend infuse the tofu, creating a dish that’s just as delicious and satisfying as its non-vegan counterpart.

Vegan Paneer Bhapa brings together a wonderful mix of textures and flavors.

What is Vegan Paneer Bhapa?

Vegan Paneer Bhapa is a steamed tofu dish inspired by traditional Bengali Paneer Bhapa, where “bhapa” means steam. This recipe marries firm tofu in a vibrant mixture of mustard seeds, poppy seeds, and fresh herbs, creating a creamy, flavorful experience.

The steaming process enhances the taste and preserves the nutrients, making it a healthy choice for any meal. This dish allows you to enjoy a very traditional dish without using dairy, making it suitable for vegans and those with lactose intolerance.

2. Steaming Tips: Wrap the marinated tofu in banana leaves or parchment paper for an authentic presentation and enhanced aroma.
3. Adjust Spices: Balance the mustard’s pungency with a touch of coconut milk or sugar for a smoother flavor.
