hobbies and wellness are interconnected | wellness directory yogchakra.com

I have many hobbies. Most of my hobbies are due to advice I got from my mom when I was 11 years old.

I grew up in India. When I was in 6th grade my family moved to the beautiful mountain town of Bhaderwah. It is about 160 km from my hometown of Srinagar. In 6th grade, I went on a 3-day school hiking trip to the mountains of Bhaderwah. I returned home to find my mom had gone to Srinagar to visit her cousin’s family. She was gone for 5 days. I missed her. I cried every day she was gone. When she returned and found out that I cried in her absence, she looked at me with sad eyes and said, “Why didn’t you do something I like when you missed me, crying for someone is the worst way of remembering them”. Somehow that advice stuck.

Since then every time I miss someone, I try to engage in their favorite activity. Slowly, the activity becomes so enjoyable that the pain of missing them is gone. Sadness gets replaced with the joy of doing something they like.  The activity becomes a happy remembrance of the person and also becomes a new hobby!

My mom loves a clean home. She always says “Cleanliness is next to Godliness “. When I moved to the US, I would clean my apartment every time I missed her. The result was a sparkling home and a happy feeling that I was doing something that makes my mom happy. Cleaning became a habit and a hobby I enjoy to this day!

When my dad passed away I immersed myself in gardening because that was his beloved activity. Whenever I see my beautiful garden I remember my dad with a smile. Now gardening is not only my  heartfelt homage to my dad but also my beloved hobby! My dad’s favorite flowers are tulips. No, I haven’t planted tulips yet, somehow I feel if I grow tulips then I might completely stop missing him. (I know, I know, our hearts have their own strange logic! )

When I lost a few friends with whom I used to have deep conversations, I turned to walking and quietly communicating with birds and trees during my walks. This  led me to discover infinite best friends in nature, filling my heart with newfound joy and understanding. Walking has become a hobby that helps me stay fit!

All these activities began as a way to cope with missing someone, and they gradually evolved into hobbies that nourish me! That is exactly what hobbies do. They nourish and rejuvenate you in a way that is joyful and fulfilling.

In this blog, I  will delve deeper into the manifold ways hobbies positively impact our overall well-being.

From stress reduction to fostering personal growth, let’s examine the profound healing power of hobbies. Through this exploration and my personal experiences, I hope to inspire you to embrace your passions, prioritize self-care through hobbies, and experience the transformative effects of nurturing your well-being in pursuit of what brings you joy and fulfillment.

Hobbies are not mere pastimes; they are avenues for self-expression, creativity, and relaxation. Hobbies Whether it is painting, playing a musical instrument, gardening, cooking, or hiking, engaging in hobbies allows us to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and immerse ourselves in activities we genuinely enjoy.

Hobbies also provide an essential outlet for rejuvenation, enabling us to recharge our batteries and prevent burnout. They offer a sense of purpose and fulfillment beyond the confines of professional or familial roles.

As we explore the significance of hobbies, it becomes evident that they are not mere distractions but integral components of overall wellbeing.

Impact of hobbies on Four Dimensions of  Wellness

1. Physical Well-being: Many hobbies involve physical activity, such as dancing, cycling, or practicing yoga, which helps improve cardiovascular health, strength, and flexibility. Engaging in active hobbies not only keeps the body in good shape but also releases endorphins, the “feel-good” hormones, contributing to overall mood enhancement.

2. Mental Well-being: Pursuing hobbies that challenge the mind, like puzzles, writing, or learning a new language, helps stimulate cognitive functions, memory retention, and problem-solving skills. Hobbies provide a sense of intellectual engagement and can serve as a form of mental exercise, promoting sharper focus and mental clarity.

3. Emotional Well-being: Hobbies offer a healthy outlet for emotional expression and stress relief. Engaging in creative hobbies like painting or writing allows individuals to process emotions, express themselves artistically, and find solace during challenging times. Moreover, hobbies can be a source of joy and pride, boosting self-esteem and fostering a positive outlook on life.

4. Social Well-being: Hobbies often bring like-minded individuals together, creating communities of shared interests and building social connections. Joining hobby clubs, attending workshops, or participating in group activities fosters a sense of belonging, reduces feelings of loneliness, and provides a sense of belonging and community.

All these components of wellness when nurtured and enhanced through hobbies, come together to create a harmonious and fulfilling life.

Physical wellbeing provides the energy and stamina to pursue hobbies actively. Mental wellbeing sharpens cognitive abilities, allowing for greater engagement and skill development in hobbies. Emotional well-being fosters a positive outlook, enabling us to find joy and solace in our chosen activities.

Social wellbeing enriches hobbies through shared experiences and supportive connections, creating a sense of belonging and community. Lastly, spiritual well-being provides a profound sense of purpose and inter-connectedness, infusing hobbies with a deeper meaning.

Spiritual health and Hobbies

In addition to these four aspects of our wellness, hobbies serve a deeper purpose when it comes to our spiritual health and well-being. Spiritual wellbeing revolves around finding meaning, purpose, and connection in life, and hobbies can contribute to this dimension in various ways such as:

1. Mindful Engagement

Many hobbies encourage being fully present in the moment, promoting mindfulness. Activities like meditation, yoga, or painting enable individuals to focus on the present experience, leading to a deeper understanding of themselves and their surroundings. This heightened awareness fosters a sense of spiritual connectedness and inner peace.

2. Self-Exploration and Reflection

Hobbies often provide a safe space for self-exploration and introspection. Engaging in creative pursuits like writing, journaling, or photography allows individuals to express their inner thoughts and emotions. Through such introspection, individuals can gain insights into their values, beliefs, and aspirations, leading to a deeper sense of self-awareness and spiritual growth.

3. Connection to Nature

Outdoor hobbies like hiking, gardening, or birdwatching offer a direct connection to nature. Spending time in natural settings allows individuals to appreciate the beauty and wonders of the world, fostering a sense of awe and reverence for the natural world. This connection to nature can lead to a deeper sense of spirituality and a feeling of being part of something greater than oneself.

4. Acts of Service and Giving Back

Some hobbies involve acts of service and giving back to the community. Engaging in volunteer work or charity activities can be spiritually fulfilling, as it provides a sense of purpose and meaning by helping others and making a positive impact on society.

5. Finding Flow and Transcendence

Hobbies often lead to a state of “flow,” where individuals become completely absorbed in the activity, losing track of time and the self. This state of flow can be deeply fulfilling and even lead to transcendent experiences, where individuals feel connected to something beyond the ordinary, such as a sense of unity with the universe or a higher power.

6. Cultivating Gratitude

Many hobbies, especially those related to art and creativity, can help individuals cultivate gratitude. Gratitude practices are deeply tied to spiritual well-being, as they foster a sense of appreciation for life’s blessings and the beauty of the world.

7. Stress Reduction and Inner Calm

Engaging in hobbies is an excellent way to reduce stress and promote inner calm. By providing an outlet for relaxation and self-expression, hobbies contribute to emotional balance and a sense of spiritual serenity.

When all these aspects of wellbeing align and flourish through hobbies, we can experience personal fulfillment, leading to a life brimming with happiness, contentment, and a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment.
