Vastu is an ancient Indian Architecture style for designing homes, gardens, offices, and, living or working spaces. This style originated in India more than 5000 years ago. The principles of Vastu are drawn from Vastu Shastra. Vastu Shastra is a part of an ancient Indian Scripture called Sthapatya Veda. The original document or “Shastra ” is written in Sanskrit. It provides guidelines on how to plan, construct and, decorate spaces. The spaces built and designed with Vastu Principles promote health, wealth, peace, and prosperity. Vastu is a method of harmonizing the flow of energy or “Prana” in any living space. The goal of  Vastu principles is to optimize the flow of cosmic energy in and around the living space. Thereby, enabling the inhabitants to experience material wealth, and success. longevity, peace, and prosperity. Interestingly, Vastu is in essence similar to a Chinese Feng Shui. In Feng Shui also energy “chi” is harmonized to optimize spaces where we work, play, and live. However, the principles of Vastu are more elaborate than Feng Shui.

Principles of Vastu

Vastu principles are based on science, art, astronomy, and astrology and lay out the principles of design and architecture. They aim at maximizing functionality, aesthetics, and the user delight of home, office, or any living space. This system recognizes the fact that the basis of all life on earth is the five basic elements in space. These elements are Space, Air, Fire,  Water, and earth. These elements are called Panchamahabhutas in Sanskrit. The goal is to create a balance of these five elements within a space with the outside environment. It is believed that by balancing the five elements we create a harmonious space. Each element has a unique quality and function.
