I have also tried somewhat unsuccessfully to have her occasionally attend mass here and elsewhere. However, for reasons too complex and private to discuss here, her churchgoing is pretty much limited to maybe Christmas Eve and certain special occasions (like her niece’s graduation mass). As a non-Christian, I actually enjoy the pageantry and order of the mass in general and at this parish in particular (including a fairly young and charismatic Irish priest). Catholic services have also come a long way, since I attended my first at Age 5. All I remember is that it was all in Latin and that many of the congregants (who at that time believe that all non-Catholics were going to hell) were sternly staring at me. I had also told my son about my experiences delivering newspapers to a Holy Family Hospital in Estherville Iowa. At that time, the hospital was staffed by an order of strict and stern German nuns, whose directives I followed to the letter (or else!). I also told him of an old friend who went to Catholic school, when Corporal punishment was still acceptable. In fact, Maureen’s parents believed that if she was “whacked” by a nun, she probably deserved it! So imagine my son’s response (a few years ago) when I told him that Gayle and I were taking him to an early Christmas Eve mass at Christ the King: I’m not going if those “nums” are there!”}]
