Wellness is more than just good physical health or a disease-free body. It can be defined as a balanced state of being achieved by integrating conventional medicine, complementary therapies, and the body’s innate capacity to heal itself. It is a way of life in which we practice healthy habits in our everyday life to attain a sense of well-being.
Wellness may seem like a new age movement but in reality, its principles can be traced to ancient civilizations. The ancient approach was based on the principle that a healthy body is an outcome of a healthy mind and spirit. Some of the earliest systems like Ayurveda, TCM, and Ancient Roman Medicine were based on this principle. Interestingly, these ancient systems of medicine are being incorporated with modern conventional medicine to create a more comprehensive approach to our well-being and health.
It is important to acknowledge that wellness is self-defined and varies from person to person. It depends on our lifestyle, our goals, our values, our environment, and many other dynamic aspects of our lives. There are usually eight aspects or dimensions of our lifestyle that have an impact on wellness and well-being.
Emotional wellness is critical to our well-being. It involves awareness, understanding, and acceptance of our emotions. We have to understand and honor our feeling and emotions. This awareness and understanding make us more present and gives us the ability to manage challenges and accept change. We can achieve emotional wellness by being mindful, by practicing gratitude, and by paying attention to our thoughts. Emotional wellness is fostered by accepting our mistakes and being open to seeking help and accepting advice from other people.
Spiritual wellness is more than following a religious faith that aligns with our values. It encompasses our core beliefs, our values, and our sense of purpose. By understanding our core beliefs and our values we are better able to understand the choices we make. From this understanding comes acceptance. By understanding the purpose of our life, there is less conflict within us regarding our choices and decisions. As a result, there is more harmony between our internal and external life. Spiritual wellness can be cultivated by investing time in understanding ourselves. Additionally, engaging in ancient practices like yoga and meditation gives us space to look within. Spending time with like-minded people can enhance our spiritual well-being
Occupational wellness is felt when there is an equilibrium between personal life and work life. It begins with identifying what career path we like to pursue. Our work has to be fulfilling as well as financially rewarding. When we do what we like to do and are content with our work, we are in a state of occupational wellness.
Intellectual wellness can be fostered by engaging in creative activities and by pursuing a variety of leisure activities that stimulate our minds. Focussed and cognitively challenging activities like solving jigsaw puzzles help keep our minds sharp. Such activities are associated with long-term mental health benefits. Additionally, challenging activities improve our sense of self-worth.
We just function better when we live and work in a pleasant, clean and safe environment. We can enhance our well-being by structuring our environment in a way that is conducive to our well-being and productivity. Both immediate and wider environments affect us. In addition to making our immediate surroundings clean, likable, and safe we have to respect our wider environment. That can be accomplished by small acts like recycling, planting more trees, volunteering to raise awareness about the climate, etc.
Physical wellness is an important part of our overall well-being. It can be fostered by taking care of our body through proper nutrition and proper physical activities that keep our body functioning at its best.
Social wellness is the key to a happy and healthy life. It comes from having and maintaining healthy and meaningful relationships with people in our lives. Having a good social network helps us cope with stress and gives us a sense of belonging. Furthermore, having a dependable social circle makes our lives more enjoyable and satisfying.
Financial wellness means feeling good about your financial situation. Being financially stable is very important for our mental peace. It can be fostered by understanding and actively taking care of our finances.
The goal of life should be to thrive rather than just survive. When we pay attention to all aspects of our life, we thrive by living a happy, fulfilling, and healthy life!
