What is Feng Shui and What are the Principles of Feng Shui

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese design philosophy to optimize spaces for good health, success, wealth, and prosperity. However, in recent years it has gained popularity all over the world, especially in the west.

What is the meaning of Feng Shui

The literal meaning of Feng Shui is “wind and water”. Feng shui, feng means wind and shui means water. In Chinese culture, wind and water are both associated with good health, wealth and happiness. Hence, the term came to mean good fortune.

What is Feng Shui Practice

It is important to understand what Feng Shui is.  It’s a practice that helps people align the energies within their surroundings. The intention is to harmonize their immediate living spaces with surrounding spaces. In this system of design, Qi is a universal term for energy. This energy is the life force of everything around us. In other words, it is believed to be in all animated and inanimate objects in the universe such as people, buildings, trees, mountains and furniture pieces within our home. Additionally, this energy called Chi is made up of  two complementary but opposing forces. These forces always coexist but in different proportions. The two elements are named yin and yang. The belief is that by balancing yin and yang elements, people can improve the flow of positive energy in their lives and keep the negative energy away. Thus Feng shui is a method of balancing yin and yang, and improving the flow of chi by arranging furniture, decorations, buildings. By following the principles of Chi large communal spaces, like offices, schools, even entire cities can be designed in a beneficial way. The ancient Chinese people believed that arranging things to create positive chi would ensure good health, improve interpersonal relationships, and bring luck and prosperity.

Principle of feng Shui

There are rules and principles to properly use all elements like, direction, size, water, geology, terrain, etc. Different principles are applied depending on the space use. For example, while designing a house one of the most important tools experts use is called Bagua. Bagua means  “eight areas”. It is an energy map placed over the floor plan of the house that needs to be designed in accordance with principles. It’s a three-by-three grid with eight boxes. Each box represents a different category of  life.

  1. Wealth
  2. Fame
  3. Love
  4. Family
  5. Children
  6. Knowledge
  7. Career
  8. People

Center box represents the owner of the space. Appropriate principles are applied in the corresponding space of the home.

In conclusion, Feng Shui principles can be used to optimize any space for good health, wealth and prosperity. The size of the space can be as small as a bedroom or as large as an entire city!
